Spring Walk to the Ridgeway & Segsbury Camp

Starting & finishing at The Greyhound Inn, Letcombe Regis, walk followed by Sunday lunch at The Greyhound Inn

The Walk at a Glance

  • Distance: approx. 4½ miles / 7.5km

  • Duration: around 1 hour 45 minutes – 2 hours (at a sociable pace)

  • Difficulty: Moderate, some stiles and a few steady climbs

  • Terrain: Village paths, open fields, woodland tracks, Ridgeway trail

  • Highlights:

    • Views across the Downs

    • The Ridgeway

    • Segsbury Camp (Iron Age hill fort)

    • A relaxed circular route finishing back at the pub

Timings

  • 11:00am  Meet outside The Greyhound Inn

  • 11:05am  Walk briefing & set off

  • 12:00pm  Reach the Ridgeway (short pause for views/photos/shared snack)

  • 12:30pm  Walk around Segsbury Camp ramparts

  • 1:15–1:30pm  Begin return leg across fields

  • 1:45–2:00pm  Arrive back at The Greyhound Inn

  • From 2:00pm  Sunday lunch

(Timings allow for a relaxed group pace and short pauses.)

Route Description (Easy-to-Follow)

  1. From The Greyhound Inn, turn left along Main Street and continue to the crossroads by St Andrew’s Church.

  2. Turn left and follow the road for a short distance before crossing diagonally onto a track heading towards the Downs.

  3. Pass through gates and fields, following the clear path southwards with open countryside ahead.

  4. The route gently climbs through woodland and fields, eventually reaching the Ridgeway.

  5. Turn left along the Ridgeway and enjoy the expansive views.

  6. After around half a kilometre, leave the Ridgeway and follow signs towards Segsbury Camp.

  7. Walk partway around the Iron Age hill fort ramparts, taking in the elevated views.

  8. Descend from the camp and follow paths across fields and woodland, gradually looping back towards Letcombe Regis.

  9. Rejoin the outward path and return to the village, finishing back at The Greyhound Inn.

 What to Wear & Bring

March walking can be changeable, so layers are key!

Footwear

  • Waterproof walking boots or sturdy trainers with good grip
    (some paths may be muddy after rain)

Clothing

  • Layers (long-sleeve top + jumper/fleece)

  • Waterproof or shower-proof jacket

  • Comfortable walking trousers or leggings

Extras

  • Small backpack

  • Water bottle

  • Sunglasses / hat if sunny

  • Optional walking poles if you like extra support

Dogs

  • Friendly Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead in places due to livestock

After the Walk

We’ll finish where we started with a relaxed Sunday lunch at The Greyhound Inn,  a perfect way to warm up, unwind, and enjoy good food and company after the walk.
